Mandate for Reform: Moldova’s Victorious pro-Europeans Must Use Their New Momentum
Moldova’s pro-European Action and Solidarity Party, PAS, secured a majority in parliament and a second consecutive term in September 28 elections, with a mandate to govern alone for the next four years. Although constitutionally barred from leading PAS, President Maia Sandu remains its most influential figure and the key force behind its continued success. PAS, which supports Moldova’s European integration, won 55 out of 101 seats, eight less than in the July 2021 elections but still enough to maintain a majority. It secured 50.2 per cent of the votes cast, nearly double that of the pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc, BEP, which took 24.17 per cent.
