Moldova’s Next Government Needs to Reach Across Societal Divide: Experts

Three major votes in a year might have confirmed Moldova’s pro-European Union trajectory, but they have also confirmed the country’s enduring polarisation. In last month’s parliamentary election, the ruling pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity, PAS, secured a new term in government with roughly half of all votes, building on President Maia Sandu’s re-election in November last year and a referendum the month before that enshrined the goal of EU accession in Moldova’s constitution. But each campaign was marred by alarmist rhetoric, instances of hate speech, and fearmongering from both sides of Moldova’s major political divide, between those who want integration with the West and those who trust Russia more.
